Our Mission Is Simple: We serve needy families in Mali who find themselves in medical crisis.  Since our founding in 2008, we have helped hundreds of patients access life saving medical care, by paying for medicines, medical tests, and surgeries.

How we got our start:  Our project began with a simple email home in the spring of 2008. When two patients died because of delayed antibiotic treatment, MMRF founder Breanna Barger knew she had to do more to help.  She wrote home of these stories and asked her friends and family to send what they could. Just $5-10 could help treat a child’s pneumonia or meningitis.  The out-pouring of support was more than expected, in just one week the fund had blossomed into thousands of dollars of aid.

The project’s design was simple.  Medical students, residents, and doctors were informed that the fund was available.  After morning patient visits (rounds) the doctors and students would identify those patients with needs.  They brought prescriptions and orders for tests. The physicians and medical students went directly and paid for them.  The best part of the morning was delivering the medicines to the families, and seeing what genuine relief and gratitude they had for this life saving support.

From our humble beginnings, we now treat complex surgical and medical cases ranging from brain and spine surgeries to complex oncology cases. We rely exclusively on local physicians and hospitals to conduct our care, thereby improving not only patients lives but also the healthcare system as a whole.
